An evocative historical novel in verse about a boy and his family who are forced to flee their home and become refugees after the British Partition of India. Twelve-year-old Raj is happiest flying kites with his best friend, Iqbal. As their kites soar, Raj feels free, like his beloved India soon will be, and he can’t wait to celebrate their independence. But when a British lawyer draws a line across a map, splitting India in two, Raj is thrust into a fractured world. With Partition declared, Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim families are torn apart—and Raj’s Hindu and Iqbal’s Muslim families are among them. Forced to flee and become refugees, Raj’s family is left to start over in a new country. After suffering devastating losses, Raj must summon the courage to survive the brutal upheaval of both his country and his heart. Inspired by the author’s true family history, Lion of the Sky is a deeply moving coming-of-age tale about identity, belonging, and the power of hope.

 1947 Partition: Hong Kong Voices

Before writing Lion of the Sky, I read everything I could find — newspaper clippings, books, documentaries, YouTube testimonies. I thought research and accurate facts would guide me.

But it was the people who impacted me most.

The first-hand stories I heard from survivors of the 1947 Partition — their voices, their silence, the way their eyes lit up or filled with tears — that’s what shaped this book.

I had the profound honour of meeting and listening to so many of these quiet heroes. People who fled their homes with nothing. Who carried only memories, names, recipes, songs — and somehow, still found the strength to rebuild.

Their stories were painful. But never without hope. Never without love. They didn’t just survive. They preserved a culture. They raised families. They whispered stories into the ears of children like me — so we would remember.

This video, Partition Voices, is my way of sharing just a few of those voices — not as history, but as heart.
Not as a distant memory, but as a living truth. I am so deeply grateful to the survivors who trusted me with their stories. May we always honour their courage. May we never forget.

And may their words continue to be heard.
